POSY SIMMONDS TO DEBUT 54-CREATOR CHARITY GRAPHIC NOVEL AT COMICA COMIKET

Author Posy Simmonds and publisher Blank Slate are to debut a ground-breaking charity graphic novel project for Shelter this weekend as part of London’s Comica Festival. Simmonds will be officially debuting Nelson  on Saturday 12th November, with an 11AM public signing at Comiket, the festival’s independent comics fair held in the Bishopgate Institute’s Great Hall.
A celebration of the incredible diversity of talent within British comics today, Nelson sees 54 of the UK’s best comic creators team up for a single story with all profits going to the housing and homelessness charity. Co-edited by Rob Davis and Woodrow Phoenix, the book features names such as Simmonds working alongside a whole host of artists associated with titles and publishers including Marvel, DC, 2000ADThe Beano and a wealth of talent from the UK’s rapidly growing independent and small press scenes.
Spanning decades of British history and a myriad of stylistic approaches, each chapter features an individual creator detailing a single event of protagonist Nel Baker’s life from birth in 1968 to the present day. A narrative told via yearly snapshots, what results is a 252 page story that’s part exquisite corpse and part full-colour illustrated relay race.
Blank Slate publisher Kenny Penman believes that “the UK comics scene is more vibrant than ever before, making now the perfect time for people to come together to aid the greatly important work that Shelter does”. He states that “When Davis and Phoenix came to me with the idea of uniting this diverse group of creators behind the charity, I knew the opportunity was too good to miss”.
