Jointly launched at the end of 2009 by Casterman and Lonely Planet, the collection of city guides tours are put together so as to be both attractive and informative –using their innovative know-how.  Rediscover other major metropolises, magnified by the art style of great cartoonists. Each destination is explored and narrated by a team author / illustrator chosen for their experience and proximity to the subject town.

The Ninth title in the series, the Istanbul city guide Routes offers a thorough immersion in the heart of one of the most mythical cities of the world…Istanbul. Jean-Bernard Carillet unveils the “cross road” between Europe and Asia, and looks at previously unpublished and best kept secrets of this destination— with the help of the very talented artist Francois Place, clearly delighted to share with readers his enthusiasm and fascination with the magic of Istanbul eternal.

A bit out of my depth when it comes to tour guides!  However, I think that these are more than just travel guides because some of the illustrations are incredible.  Travelling to Istanbul? Speak French? Want a guide and art book in one? Here you go!

Tenth title in the series, the Montreal city guide offers an unexpected look at two major Canadian cities, favourites with  French travellers: Montreal. Indisputably American by its morals, culture and tempo and Quebec which has always preserved its Latin spirit— inherited from its distant origins in France, and thus assert its own identity, as original qu’attachante. It is this “mix” only in North America which enables the creators to reveal some of the side roads, addresses unpublished and best kept secrets in Montreal.

Big fan of American urban environments, Romain Renard with enthusiasm and talent makes us share the beautiful energy of Quebec. The trip lasts a few hundred miles north, with a section specifically devoted to Quebec City.

Again, some very nice art here that captures Quebec in particular –French speaking and a French feel to it while still being a North American city.  Nice book.
