In the wake of the great cities of the ancient Gallo-Roman area already covered in the footsteps of Alix ( Lugdunum , Vienna , Orange / Vaison -la-Romaine ... ), here , echoing the exploration of Aquae - Sextiae ( Aix en Provence ), another major step in the Mediterranean Gaul Massilia (Marseille), was founded  more than 2000 years ago.

The biggest port is covered here at its most spectacular and in the most picturesque dimensions, by the enthusiastic and inspired driving Gilbert Bouchard.

Marseille- Provence , which includes the territory of Aix -en- Provence, has been designated 'European Capital of Culture " in 2013.

This is not a comic strip from the Alix series but, as noted, a fully illustrated book looking at the history of Marseille –and there are many fantastic illustrations in here. My complaint is that my French just is not good enough to read the text.  This is the sort of history book I used to love as a kid (yes, we had books “way back then”).

Excellent.
